I was a high school music teacher with absolutely no budget and a very small library, so I became intimately familiar with the Choral Public Domain Library (cpdl.org) and the International Music Score Library Project (imslp.org), both of which have tons of wonderful free resources for musicians. I couldn't have survived teaching (or grad school, come to think of it) without these sites.
But that also means I know how difficult they can be to search, and how sometimes none of the editions available are clear or easy to use. And if you're not sure exactly what you want, diving in to find something---anything---can feel overwhelming. There's so much great music from the past, though, and we at RMCC started talking about ways we could bring more of that music to the present in ways that would be useful for teachers and other conductors.
From that, the Choral Commons was born, which is our line of curated public domain recordings and scores. Every week, we feature a new public domain piece that you can get at CPDL or IMSLP---or you can buy our newly-engraved edition for a really affordable price. We even sell practice tracks, if you're interested in them. You can see what we have on offer here, and know that the collection is constantly expanding.
But starting this week, we're going to be adding to our regular Choral Commons release with an extra recording of something seasonal. It's not too late to add these to your program this year, make note for next season, or just enjoy listening to some great music. Watch this space (and our YouTube channel) for weekly releases of some wonderful music that we have really enjoyed discovering and rediscovering!
